The Green Lion Devouring the Sun is a classical image coming from the old practice of alchemy; the progenitor to modern-day chemistry. Alchemists were notoriously secretive about their recipes and methods, and thus liked to talk about their methods with symbolic imagery. The Green Lion in this case represents Aqua Regia, a highly corrosive and volatile mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid. The Sun represents gold. Therefore, this image represents the process of dissolving gold in aqua regia.
